UO Community Wiki (also known as UOCWiki) is an
Encyclopedic Reference WIKI for the MMORPG
Ultima_Online's (UO) Community of Players. Site content deals with what the players do in UO on a particular Shard. This
is the right place to maintain character biographies, write stories, describe player towns, document establishments, describe alliances, and much more. This
is not the right place for documenting UO capabilities, UO clients, game mechanics, or the in-game world (called the Realm) in general, such as dungeon maps or item and monster descriptions. It does not function as a news service, forum system, or calendar system since these capabilities are on other UO official sites and fan sites. We do not want to duplicate effort here.
Some UOCWiki information is copyrighted where noted and must be respected. All other information may be copied and used by the general public, but still must be referenced to UOCWiki. (See UOCWiki Copyright
?)
UOCWiki is currently (January 2008) being established for the Chesapeake Shard (Server) and may be expanded for other shards. (See
UOCWiki Expansion Plan).
People may register an account on UOCWiki to add and edit pages. An extensive system of UOCWiki group permissions allows for registered users to have different capabilities in different Content categories and Feature areas.
Goals
- A common site where everyone can record information about their particular Shard.
- Create and edit pages about everything that existed, exists, or has happened.
- A place for groups of people to work together on projects.
- Specific users may be assigned to Project Groups.
- Project Groups may "own" a Category in the Wiki where only members of the Group may view, edit, and administer information in the Group.
- A place to collaborate on ideas and information.
- Since a Wiki (by its very nature) can be edited by many people, teams or everyone can help maintain the information here.

Open Access and Editing Philosophy
People have asked about how open this Wiki is for people to edit pages AND how to prevent people from destroying pages.
- The very nature of this Wiki is to allow every registered user to edit nearly every page.
- People who start new pages also have an option to invoke a LOCK on the page, where only they and Staff/Admins can edit the page. Locking pages is NOT ENCOURAGED because it prevents the ability for people to add or correct information, help with formatting, correct misspellings/grammar, and collaborate on information and ideas.
- All page edits are recorded in history and tracked. Admins have user IP address information on ALL activity. Everyone can also see what registered user edited (or destroyed) a page. Abusers can be easily reported and deleted.
- Destroyed pages can easily be "reverted" to an earlier history by Staff and Administrators.
- "Hacking" of this site is Illegal and can be prosecuted by Law. Registered users will not be as anonymous as they think.
User Groups
There are several User Groups within the UOCWiki system. Each has its own set of permissions to view, edit, help people, and manage the site.
BOLD indicates which groups currently exist and can be used.
Normal Users:
- Anonymous (core) - can view most pages.
- Registered (core) - can create and edit most pages.
Staff
- Counselors (special) - people who help others with UOCWiki.
- ArticleEditors (special) - can review and approve submitted Articles, Directory Links, etc.
- Editors (core) - can edit all pages including Private Group pages.
Developers
- Developers (special) - can develop Plugins, install, and test.
Administrators
- Common to ALL Administrators. Has access to user IP addresses.
- SubAdmins (special) - can edit most administrative settings.
- Admins (core) - can edit all administrative settings.
- AsstSuperAdmins (special) - can edit all administrative settings and directly access the database and site files.
- SuperAdmin (single user) - can do everything.
Community Groups (open and private)
- Community Group (special) - can be easily created for guilds and communities to have specific permissions over pages in their Community Category.
- Group:Playwrights (special) - can work privately in the Playwrights Category to build UO Plays.
- Group::PaxLair? (special) - PaxLair citizens.
Site Information Assurance (IA)
We strive to provide the highest IA possible for this site.
Five IA Pillars
Protecting Your Privacy
Preventing Identity Theft
We do all we can to protect your real-life private information. Everyone must help, though. Report any problems you see to the Editors or higher level staff.
DO NOT put the following on any page:
- Full real name.
- Exact date of birth to include year.
- Home Addresses.
- Home phone numbers.
Our Editors will DELETE any of the above from this Wiki if they find this information, then have the Admins purge the history files as quickly as we can. Anyone caught willfully revealing this information to potentially harm other people will be banned and accounts deactivated or deleted.
UO Community Wiki is NOT
UOCWiki is NOT designed to replace or duplicate other online services and Wikis such as the
Ultima Online Main Site
,
UO Stratics
,
UO Forums
,
UO Stuff
, and
UO Guide
. In fact, linking to these services' pages are highly encouraged for all people entering information into the UOCWiki. We do not want to duplicate effort within the UO Community of Players.
- However, we know that some information on Web Site Forums, such as UO Stratics shard Forums, will be deleted over time and no longer be available. UOCWiki provides a place to archive such information following the Terms of Service and Copyright restrictions on UO Stratics Forums.
- Content and information MUST NOT be simply copied from various sources without permission from authors. For example, we CAN NOT copy UO Stuff
or UO Guide
information directly into UOCWiki without their permission.

Timeline
| Date | Event |
| Nov 11, 2007 | UO Chesapeake Wiki site started by the player behind Winfield of PaxLair. |
| Nov 14, 2007 | Pre-Alpha Development started. |
| Dec 5, 2007 | Used for support to Gone to Wind Theatrical Play for Guardians Gate 1st Anniversary. |
| Dec 24, 2007 | Nexus and Silverfoot brought on as pre-Alpha testers and Consultants. |
| Dec 27, 2007 | Full concepts in development for UOCWiki as a UO Community Wiki, not just for Chesapeake. Concepts will be developed over the next couple of months. |
| Dec 28, 2007 | UOForums graciously established some currently private forums to help UOCWiki administrators, consultants, and invited users to work together on developing the UOCWiki system. Thanks UOForums !! |
| Dec 31, 2007 | Correspondence received from UOGuide suggesting use of UOGuide for UOCWiki efforts. Started detailed evaluation of Wiki systems (MediaWiki used on UOGuide versus TikiWiki used on UOCWiki). |
| Jan 5, 2007 | After evaluation of MediaWiki and TikiWiki, decided to continue development of UOCWiki to provide a robust environment for UO Players focused on shard-specific information and collaboration. MediaWiki was found to lack many features needed for Shard guilds, communities, and teams to publicly and privately document/collaborate on their information. MediaWiki is primarily designed for a fully open multi-user editing system and specifically cautions against attempting to use it for any private categories of information. UOCWiki requires abilities for groups to work quietly and privately at times before offering information to the public. Many groups exist that cross guild, community, and even shard boundaries. UOCWiki and UOGuide are destined to work together where perhaps UOGuide is the encyclopedia of all game mechanics, reference information, and shard-specific installations (such as unique locations), whereas UOCWiki is a work-place environment for developing player events, documenting detailed shard history and guilds created by the players, and much more that requires rapid collaboration, privacy at times, and automation of tools (plugins) to support the players' information. |
| Jan 6, 2007 | UOCWiki Survivorship Plan? started to allow several people to administer the UOCWiki system, back it up, and re-host it if the primary User:admin becomes incapable to maintain or administer the UOCWiki system. This Plan is designed to ensure ALL information entered into UOCWiki will be maintained for at least 10 years hence. UOCWiki is designed to be maintained for 10 years even if Ultima Online would cease to exist as an MMORPG. |
